Overdue Project Car(s) Update
With the basics needed to run the engine, fuel, spark and cooling, I was able to crank it up. I set the timing, adjusted the carb and let it warm up to operating temperature. Next was the compression test. I removed the plugs and tested each cylinder. Results were less than impressive, ranging from 125 to 135. 170 would be great and I didn’t really expect to get that, but would be OK in the 150 range. I didn’t bother with a wet test with all the cylinders being about the same low reading, I know the rings are worn and it needs to be “freshened up”.
I am now toying with the idea of a long block 302 (block, crank, pistons, rods, bearings, cam, cylinder heads with valve train). Or maybe overhaul this engine myself. I ruled out a complete Crate engine due to the expense. I’m not looking for a race car here, just a dependable cruiser that can at least run at interstate speeds. The little 200 six currently in Blaze ain’t that engine and is probable need of an overhaul as well.
Decisions, decisions…
I also am having thoughts of putting Rusty on the road. The body is in reasonable shape with exception of the tailgate, floor pans and bed. Most are available in the aftermarket. Which brings me to another thing. The guy I bought Rusty from had another similar Ranchero (289 V8, automatic). I made him offer when I picked up Rusty. We both agreed to wait a while and revisit it in a month or so. Long story short, I’ll pick up Rusty2 this week. The goal now will be get what I need to put the 289 in Blaze and make one Rusty out of the two Rancheros.
Here are some photos that Donna took via our security cameras as I worked through all the above process.
In other news, we’ve taken Blaze to couple of local Cruise-ins. (read blog one/ read blog two) We got some nice compliments and met some really nice folks. I’m joining a local car club located in Crossville. They tend to cruise every weekend or so and host their own Cruise-in 4 to 6 times a year. Looking forward to some good connections and fun conversations. I’ve already have some recommendations for upholstery work as well as getting a new convertible top. Here are some pics I took at their last downtown cruise-in that where I took Blaze. You can see all my pics HERE.
